Four days with friends in Piles, Valencia are over and much too quickly. Thank you, Richard and Sheila and Vee and Ellie for a welcome rest from our travels. For beach and pool and dinners and games and the “Spanish” Olympics. But most of all, for time with all of you.
Mad, whirlwind tour of Alhambra was exquisite and awesome in every way. Even the delays and hobbling around with my new cane and foot taping (foot was getting worse, not better!) Could not spoil my pleasure.
Now we are relaxing in Piles (Peeh-lays) near Valencia with the fabulous Sheila Thames and family.
Spent the morning at the beach in Algeciras, then packed up for the drive to Granada. Before we left the coast, we stopped for lunch at Juan’s Beach Bar somewhere past Estofona. Then up into the Sierra Nevada mountains to Granada. Checked into our airbnb near the cathedral. Next we need to find a parking garage and then dinner at some point. Tomorrow, we tour the Alhambra before heading to see Sheila and Richard and their girls near Valencia.
We went to the tiny country of Gibraltar yesterday. Took s terrific taxi tour with a man from Latvia who has family in Carson City and knows home. Also a Belgian family. Thankfully everyone spoke English and we had a wonderful time. One of the apes stole my bag of crisps right out of my hand. I was just stepping out of the shop and it startled me so I screamed like a girl. (They are the best screamers.)
We could see Africa from the top of the rock, we are so close. Toying with the idea of a quick ferry ride to Morocco.
Saw the Moorish Castle, St Michael’s Cave and the Hercules columns/rocks. We are staying at a hotel across the bay in Algeciras. Right on the beach, great price and nice staff. Sadly the twin I booked six months ago was not available. Sleeping with a nice ocean breeze is fun if your room is not over the parking lot of a very popular restaurant!
Very cranky this morning until my first cup of coffee.
Now I am writing on the beach, sipping my second cup and life is looking good.
Off to Granada today and we will see the Alhambra tomorrow.
Well, we made it 50+ days with no accidents or illness, but first my knee (which is mostly recovered) and now Jacob has a sore throat and a cough. Tylenol, Benadryl, a cup of tea and a long sleep, then we’ll see.
In the meantime, we have a great two bedroom apartment in the old city and close to good restaurants so I can feed the boy. How do you say chicken soup in Spanish? On second thought, I think I will make it myself.
Spent the day exploring the Palace Real and a second visit to the magnificent Prado. Learned the Spanish for ice pack (bolsa de hielo) when i stepped off a curb and went sprawling. No permanent damage, but my knee is bruised and swollen. Of course we have a 3rd floor apartment for the next two days. After the ice pack and some aleve, feels much better, but there will be whining, I can pretty much guarantee it.
We are in Toledo (Spain, not Ohio) and hanging out in the plaza, waiting doe our host to arrive.
Paella for dinner tonight. Maybe some wine.
Picked up our lovely Fiat 500cc convertible this morning and headed to Madrid with random stops for food and drinks and gas. Shocking surprise in paying 50 euros in tolls, but gas is really cheap so it all comes out even in the end.
Found our apartments very near the Prado. We are checked in and getting a drink, then will head out to the museum before grabbing a late (for us) dinner and the doing some much needed laundry. Hopefully it dries before checkout, otherwise the Fiat becomes a drying rack!
